چکیده
the surgical intensive care unit is not an unusual event.1 Prompt recognition and management of adrenal insufficiency are critical to patient recovery and survival. Although it is an infrequent presenting sign of adrenal insufficiency, hypercalcemia is a well recognized complication of the disorder.2,3 Hypercalcemia has been reported to occur not only with primary hypoadrenalism but also with secondary hypoadrenalism.3 This report describes a 45-year-old woman whose postoperative course was complicated by adrenal insufficiency that presented as hypercalcemia. The article also reviews the pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, and management of hypercalcemia secondary to adrenal insufficiency.

Diagnostic approach to hypercalcemia
It is usually not difficult to differentiate between them. Malignancy is often evident clinically by the time it causes hypercalcemia, and patients with hypercalcemia of malignancy usually have higher calcium concentrations and are more symptomatic from hypercalcemia than individuals with primary hyperparathyroidism. Although hypercalcemia in otherwise healthy outpatients is usually due to prim...
متن کاملBoth duration and degree of hypercalcemia influence the reduced parathyroid hormone response to hypocalcemia after hypercalcemia.
The stimulation of parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion by hypocalcemia is reduced when hypocalcemia is preceded by hypercalcemia. The present study investigates whether the duration and degree of hypercalcemia influence the reduced PTH response to hypocalcemia after hypercalcemia. In addition, the implication of the arachidonic acid (AA) signaling pathway in this effect is evaluated. The PTH re...
متن کاملMultifactorial Hypercalcemia and Literature Review on Primary Hyperparathyroidism Associated with Lymphoma
The most common cause of hypercalcemia in hospitalized patients is malignancy. Primary hyperparathyroidism most commonly causes hypercalcemia in the outpatient setting. These two account for over 90% of all cases of hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia can be divided into PTH-mediated and PTH-independent variants. Primary hyperparathyroidism, familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia, familial hyperparathyr...
متن کاملA challenging case of hypercalcemia.
The authors report a case of hypercalcemia in a 79-year-old woman that led to multiple hospitalizations. The case was challenging because the hypercalcemia was ultimately found to have 2 distinct causes. The patient initially presented with an elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) level, consistent with primary hyperparathyroidism. She underwent parathyroidectomy and her hypercalcemia resolved in ...
متن کاملHypercalcemia in children and adolescents.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW In this review, we define hypercalcemia levels, common causes for hypercalcemia in children, and treatment in order to aid the practicing pediatrician. RECENT FINDINGS One rare cause of hypercalcemia in the child is familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia (also termed familial benign hypercalcemia). Mutations that inactivate the Ca-sensing receptor gene FHH have been described ...
متن کاملPamidronate therapy for hypercalcemia and congenital mesoblastic nephroma: a case report
Hypercalcemia can causes life threatening complications. We report an infant with severe hypercalcemia due to congenital mesoblastic nephroma. Hypercalcemia was corrected before nephrectomy by pamidronate. According to our knowledge this is a rare case with severe neoplasm induced hypercalcemia among neonates who treated by bisphosphonates. The aim of this report is to define new approach to ne...
